| Quick Start Instructions |

Your solar system has been designed to provide enough hot water from the sun for your household on most days. It has a backup system that can be activated automatically by a timer or manually by the switch on the timer. If the timer has been activated by the installer, you should always have enough hot water as the electric backup will automatically come on when needed. If they did not set the timer on automatic, you will have to turn the switch on the timer to the "ON" position if you don't have enough hot water on a very cloudy day.

How It Works

Your solar system consists of solar panels on the roof and 1 or 2 solar storage tanks plumbed to a top-connect design. The components are:
Solar panels or collectors - collect heat from the sun and heat water (you may have 1, 2, or 3)
Solar tank(s) - stores the solar heated water and heats the water electrically (if needed)
Pump - circulates water through the panels to be heated and stored in the tank
Solar Controller - turns on the pump when the sun has heated the panels up
Timer - activates the backup heating element in the tank
Thermostat - limits the temperature that the backup element will heat the water up to
Red Button (Overtemperature thermostat) - pops out if the temperature reaches 190 degrees
Top Access Cover - the thermostat and the red button are located here
Bottom Access Cover - the tank sensor for the solar controller is usually located here
Hose Bibs - used to flush the tank and panels during maintenance
Ball Valves - used to shut off the water to the solar tank or the solar panels
Thermometer - tells you how hot the water is in your solar tank
Tank Anode Rod - sacrafices itself to keep your tank from rusting - replace every 5 years

Normal Operation - The solar controller measures the temperature of the solar panel and the solar tank. When the sun heats the panel(s) a few more degrees than the tank in the morning, the controller starts the pump. It will cycle on and off or keep running most of the day, depending on the design of your particular system and how many clouds there are. It should NEVER run at night. The system is designed so that by about 4 o'clock you will have a tankful of 130-degree water on a sunny day. If you didn't use it all the day before, it will be hotter. If it is a cloudy day or you used a lot of water, it will be cooler.

Solar Controller Settings - There is a switch on the controller that has three positions. Automatic is the normal setting. OFF is used for maintenance. ON is used to make the pump run day and night when you are on vacation. The Goldline also has two dials (potentiometers) inside.

Living With Your Solar

You will find that if you don't use all of the hot water on one day, it will be hotter the next day and you can use more then as you can mix more cold water with it when you take a shower or bath. If it is a cloudier day than normal, you might want to use less hot water that day or you might have to use a little backup electricity. The backup element usually doesn't use much electricity because the sun will heat the water up most of the way even on a cloudy day, so don't be afraid to use it! The solar panels are sized for the normal number of clouds in your area, so if you get an abnormally sunny day day, the water may get extra hot and you can use extra hot water that day.

Scheduled Maintenance

Solar systems usually require very little maintenance. However, if you do that little bit of maintenance the system can last 50% to 100% longer. The recommended schedule is an annual service and a major tuneup every 5 years.
